How to Compare Electricity Rates in Texas
If you’re a homeowner, renter, or business owner who’s in charge of tending to their utilities, you’ve got some tough decisions in your future. Choosing your phone, TV, and internet provider are difficult, but you can usually narrow it down based on who provides the best service at the best price in your area. Taking care of your gas utilities is also easy peasy because you don’t get to choose your gas provider.
Where things get tricky, however, is when you start the process of choosing an electricity provider. There are over 120 electricity providers in Texas, and they typically each offer between five and fifteen electricity plans. Because of how many plans and companies there are to choose from, comparing electricity rates on your own is a tall task. If you want to find a better way of comparing electricity rates, you’ve come to the right place.
How to Compare Electricity Rates in Texas
When comparing electricity rates in Texas, you have two options.
Option A
Your first option is to spend hours, if not days, of your time researching the various companies that supply electricity to your area. This will be determined by the zip code of your home or business. Once you have a list of the companies to choose from, you’ll have to create a spreadsheet with all of the plans they offer.
If you live in a big city like Houston or Dallas, you can have up to fifty plus companies and several hundred plans to choose between. Every company and plan is different, and many of them have hidden fees and tiered rates that you won’t know about until after you’ve signed up. Doing adequate research to make an informed decision can take days to do, which most people don’t have time for. Even after making your choice, there’s no guarantee that you made the right decision!
Option B
The easier, better, and cheaper option is to contact us at EnerGenie and allow us to do the leg work for you. Here’s how it works.
- Go to myenergenie.com and enter your zip code.
- After entering your zip code, you’ll be asked several questions about your energy usage, the type of home you live in, and a few personal questions.
- After signing up, EnerGenie will perform a comprehensive search of all the electricity plans you qualify for and choose the best one for you.
- We can do in a manner of minutes what would take you days.
- We also guarantee that we’ll find the best plan for you and take hidden fees and rates into consideration.
- After enrolling you into your new electricity plan, we’ll monitor the market, handle communications between you and your REP, and take care of re-enrollment when the time comes.
- EnerGenie is your personal electricity concierge service, and our only goal is to save you as much money as possible.
Option B sounds like a no-brainer to me! We’re the best in the business when comparing electricity rates in Texas.
Why is It Necessary to Compare Electricity Rates?
If you care about saving money and getting the best electricity at the lowest rate, you must compare electricity rates. Every company is different, and the rate that you see listed next to a plan doesn’t always tell the whole story. Most electricity plans have tiered rates that go up or down depending on how much electricity you use.
Unless you do in-depth research and rate comparison, you won’t be aware of these tiered rates until you get your monthly power bill.
What are the Different Types of Rates and Plans?
Fixed-Rate Plans
Fixed-rate plans are when you get locked into a fixed rate that stays the same throughout your contract. So, if you sign up for a 2-year electricity plan at a fixed rate of 14 cents / kWh, the rate won’t change until the end of your contract.
Tiered Rates
The exception to the fixed-rate rule is that most fixed-rate plans have tiered rates. This means that while the fixed rate you sign up at is listed as 14 cents / kWh, the rate will go up or down depending on the type of plan. For example, let’s say that the rate you see listed is 14 cents based on 1,000 kilowatt-hours of use.
In the fine print of your plan, however, it states that if you use between 500 and 1,000 kilowatt-hours, the rate jumps up to 20 cents. If you use over 2,000 kilowatt-hours, the rate jumps to 18 cents instead of 14. It’s essential to be aware of these rates because the amount of electricity you use will determine your actual rate.
Prepaid Plans
Prepaid plans are where you pay for electricity at the start of the month before you use it. This type of plan usually has higher rates than plans where you pay for electricity after using it.
Why are There so Many Electricity Comparison Sites in Texas?
When deregulation first happened in Texas and residents were given the freedom to choose their electricity provider, the state of Texas quickly saw a problem. It was next to impossible to compare all the available rates and plans, which led to the founding of Power to Choose. Power to Choose is the official rate comparison website of the Public Utilities Commission of Texas.
While this tool is free to use, it was proven to be far from perfect, which led to the founding of a number of electricity comparison websites that charge a small fee to find the best electricity plan for you. EnerGenie is one of these many sites and happens to be one of the best.
