Gas and Electric Companies in Texas
When it comes to providing power to homes, gas and electric are the two powerhouses. Nearly all homes in the country have either gas or electric power, or both, that keep their houses operational. They fulfill similar needs but usually cost different amounts and come with different pros and cons.
If you’re on the fence about whether or not you should have gas or electric or a combo, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll compare the two power sources and help you decide which one is right for you. However, if you know that electricity is the option for you, contact us at EnerGenie to find the best plan and rate available.
Do Companies Offer Gas and Electric in Texas?
Depending on where you are in Texas, there’s a chance that you can get your gas and electric from the same company. However, there are over 120 REPs and a similar amount of gas companies, and not all of them offer the same things. It’s also essential to decide which type of energy you want at your home, which we’ll cover in the next section.
Some of the larger utility companies in Texas, such as Reliant and Just Energy, offer both. However, most smaller REPs and recent startups offer just electricity and leave gas plans to others.
Should I Have Gas and Electric at My Home?
Many people have trouble deciding which form of energy to have in their homes. For the most part, everyone has electricity, but not everyone has gas. It largely depends on where your house is located and whether or not you have access to natural gas, which not everyone does. If you have your heart set on gas but don’t have access to natural gas, you can also opt for propane or LP.
Electricity
Technically, if you have electricity, there’s a good chance that it was created from natural gas. Fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal remain the dominant source of electricity, with nuclear power, wind, and solar energy next in line. Because natural gas is taken and converted into electricity, electricity is usually slightly more expensive than natural gas. However, it’s rare that you find homes anywhere in Texas without electricity.
Gas and Electric
For those on the fence, it’s very common in Texas to have both gas and electric. Electricity serves as the primary power source for the outlets, lights, and many of the appliances and devices in your home. Gas, on the other hand, is often reserved for larger appliances such as stoves, furnaces, water heaters, and dryers. Gas tends to be slightly cheaper than electricity and powers large appliances more efficiently.
If you don’t want to mess with gas, though, and want just electricity, contact us at EnerGenie. We’ll find you the best plan for your needs based on your location and the type of plan you’re looking for. We’ll also ensure that you don’t blow through your energy budget during the summer or winter months when people typically use more electricity.
How Much Will My Gas and Electric Bills be?
Estimating exactly how much your gas and electric bill will be is difficult because of several factors.
- Energy prices are volatile.
Gas and electric prices are similar to the stock market in that prices are constantly fluctuating. The cheapest company and plan today might be one of the most expensive tomorrow, so finding a consistent plan is important.
- Time of year
Certain times of year will cause energy prices to skyrocket. People often use more electricity during the summer months and gas during the winter months, and you can expect prices to go up and down accordingly.
- Extra costs
You also have to realize that you’re not paying just for electricity or gas on your monthly utility bills. You’re also paying a slight upcharge to compensate your REP for what they had to pay to purchase the gas and electric from a power generating company. Your REP also isn’t the company that manages the power lines, electric poles, and meters that bring electricity to your home. Therefore, part of your monthly bill goes towards compensating the TDU that delivers electricity to your home.
Gas and Electric Plans
Whether you want a gas or electric plan or both, choosing the right ones is essential. While gas and electric plans are closely related and similar in structure, they’re not the same. They’re both forms of energy, but they’re different forms often offered by various companies. Ideally, you should have both a gas and an electricity plan, with electric powering your primary devices, lights, and outlets and gas powering the major appliances in your home.
The advantage of having gas to power your water heater, dryer, stove, and furnace is that it’s cheaper. Additionally, you’ll also be able to rely on gas energy to keep your furnace or fireplace running during the winter months if the power goes out. At the very least, it’s a good idea to have gas available as a backup source of heat in case of an emergency.
While gas and electric plans are different in cost and the service being provided, they offer the same types of plans. Fixed-rate, variable-rate, time-of-use plans, prepaid plans, and tiered-rate plans are all available for gas and electric.
