Unfortunately, switching to a different provider can be tricky if you’re currently enrolled in an electric plan.

Contact us if you’re tired of overpaying on your power bill and want to know how to switch electricity providers in Texas.
Reasons to Switch Electricity Providers
There are over 120 retail electric providers in Texas, which means there are lots of companies and plans to choose from. Every company is unique and gets run differently. There are many reasons why you might be fed up with your current company and want to make the switch.
Your Contract has Expired
If you were enrolled in a fixed-rate term contract but it has expired, now’s the time to switch electricity providers. REPs sometimes have special, discounted rates the first time you sign up for a contract with them. Therefore, there’s a good chance that the rate you pay will be higher when you re-enroll than it was when you initially signed up.
Poor Customer Service
One of the biggest knocks on dozens of REPs in Texas is that they have very poor customer service. Poor customer service is often because REPs outsource their customer service call center to other parts of the country and world. As a result, you’re not always dealing with local Texans who understand what you’re talking about.
Another reason for poor customer service is because of staffing issues. Companies try to save money by having as few staff on hand as possible, and customer service is often what pays the price.
More Stability or a Different Type of Contract
It’s also possible that you’re looking for a longer contract or a different type of contract. Most term contracts in Texas are for 12 to 24 months, but there are some that last upwards of 36 months. Or, maybe you were previously enrolled in a month-to-month, prepaid, flat-rate, or variable-rate contract and want to switch to a fixed-rate one. If so, contact us at EnerGenie for the best plans and the most competitive rates in your area.
To Save Money
The most popular reason for switching electricity providers is to save money. Like I said before, there are over 100 REPs in Texas, which means there are tons of options to choose from. If you feel like you were overpaying on your last electricity plan and you’re tired of it, EnerGenie is here to help! You can save hundreds of dollars per year when you switch electricity providers with us.
How Long Does It Take to Switch Electricity Providers?
Traditionally, switching electricity providers in Texas was a timely process. It can take anywhere from seven to ten days to switch from one provider to another, depending on how you do it. However, when you use EnerGenie and plan ahead, you can switch electricity providers with no interruption in your service.
When is the Right Time to Switch Electricity Providers?
The best time to switch electricity providers is towards the tail end of your contract when early termination fees won’t apply. For most plans, the early termination fees are voided when you switch plans within 14 days of when your current contract expires. However, here are a few other instances when it’s the right time to switch electricity providers.
- If your electricity company changed your plan without contacting you first.
- If your electricity company ignores your requests to stay on your current plan or keep your current rate.
- When you are the victim of a “rate hike” from your electricity provider.
- When you realize that you disagree with the views and work ethics of your current electricity provider.
What Makes It Hard to Switch Electricity Providers?
Unfortunately, not everyone who wants to switch electricity providers has an easy opportunity to do so. There might be roadblocks or fees that block your path and make it difficult to switch from your current power company to a different one.
Early Termination Fees
The main reason that people aren’t willing or able to switch electricity providers is because of early termination fees. Early termination fees are when you get charged a sum of money for terminating your contract prematurely. Depending on the structure of your electricity plan, your fee will be either a flat rate or a monthly charge.
Flat rate early termination fees can range from $100 to $300 and will apply whether you have one month left on your plan or 18 months. With monthly charge termination fees, on the other hand, you get charged a set amount for every month remaining on your contract. For example, let’s say you have a $25 monthly charge for early termination. If you only have one month left on your contract, the cost is $25 to opt-out. If you have 30 months left on your contract, however, the charge is $750.
How to Switch Electricity Providers Manually
Switching your electricity provider manually is a tall task, and here’s how it works.
- Evaluate your current plan, monthly energy usage, and cost.
- Find out which REPs are available in your area, and research every plan they offer.
- Depending on where you live, there might be over 100 REPs.
- Read the fine print and details of every plan available to you to find out which one fits you the best.
In most cases, you’ll end up paying just as much if not more on your new electricity plan than you did on your old one.
